Illaoi was first shown as a fighter in {{Game}} on August 1, 2022<ref>https://www.riotgames.com/en/news/dev-illaoi-in-project-l</ref>, but she wasn't officially revealed until almost 2 years later on April 22, 2024.<ref>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZWu8nA45ko</ref> [[Caroline Montano]] explained in her gameplay reveal trailer that Illaoi is "Not a puppet character", because they "didn't want it to feel like her tentacles were doing all the fighting for her".
